PHILADELPHIA - Drexel University overcame an early three-goal and 6-3 first-half deficit and contested Ohio State down the stretch but the Buckeyes managed to hold on for the 8-7 win in men?s lacrosse action this afternoon at Drexel Field. Ohio State, who received three goals and one assist from its senior attack standout Sandy Boyce, improved to 3-1. Drexel, which scored two goals in each of the last three quarters of action, falls to 2-2 in the Dragons' first-ever meeting with Ohio State. Freshman Mark Williamson impressed for the Dragons with three goals and one assist. Drexel keeper Jordie Olivella tallied a season-high 15 saves in defeat.
Boyce, who also netted Ohio State?s final goal of the game (5:37) when Drexel had gained momentum and was pressing down the stretch, opened all scoring in the contest with a goal just 55 seconds into action. The Buckeyes added two more tallies, with freshman Anthony Gilardi figuring in both scores, to take an early 3-0 lead. Ohio State maintained that cushion, 6-3, at the half, but managed just one goal in each of the last two quarters as the Dragons outscored the Buckeyes 4-2 in the final 30 minutes. Drexel pulled to within one, 6-7, on an extra-man conversion by Bob Calamita just 2:38 into the fourth. Boyce regained a two-goal edge for his Buckeyes, and Drexel's Williamson capitalized at the 6:49 mark for what proved to be the final tally of the contest.
