OSHWEKEN -- The Defending Eastern Canadian Champion, Brampton Excelsiors showed the Six Nations Chiefs why they’re favoured to repeat as the Ontario Major Champions after a 12-6 win at the Gaylord Powless Arena Thursday night before 200 fans.
Brampton led 3-2 after 20 minutes and extended their lead to 7-3 after 40. The Chiefs are still having the problem of shutting down the opposition in the third period as the Excelsior scored four time in the first 4:27 of the third to salt away the game.
Excelsiors Head Coach, Terry Sanderson said, "We thought that, for our first game out, we’re pretty happy with the result. We only had a two day training camp simply because we had so many guys go late into the NLL season."
The Brampton team dominated the Chiefs wherever there was a loose ball. "The guys that we use on our loose ball situation are guys that play on the loose ball squad in the NLL." Sanderson added "They’re not very big guys, but they get to the ball
quick. I actually think that it will be one of our strengths this year."
Brampton is one of the teams that is good measuring stick for the Chiefs and with two more matches against the Excelsiors this summer, Six Nations will be able to see how they’ve come together as a team.
The Chiefs were expected to unveil their new look, but due to
manufacturing difficulties the new Black, Red and White jersey were unavailable at game time.
"We’ve got a very talented team." Sanderson said, "We got a lot of quickness and the player have a very high skill level." Dan Teat led the Excelsiors with six (4G, 2A) while Cory Bomberry netted
a hat-trick and an assist for Six Nations.
