No, don't get your hopes up, there is no league here (yet).
It's just that I called Mississauga Parks and Rec and was told that to rent a rink for an hour of boxla is $36.
I kind of like the sport (duh) and I want to get better at it so that I won't feel like a complete goof in the Brampton Masters League next year. I was thinking that getting a bunch of guys together who live in or around Mississauga for an hour or so of fun, messing around with lax gear (no helmets or gloves, just sticks and balls...boy, that just sounds wrong...) would be cool. The only problem here: we would need at least one goalie (though I'm sure that we could get by with one) at least 6 guys (3 on 3) and it would have to be totally non-contact. I'm just a little to delicate for full-contact without equipment...

Anyone on these boards from Mississauga or thereabouts? If so, drop me a line via e-mail or through my website at http://www.xanga.com/rocklax. See you on the floor!

$36, wow, that's cheap.

Depending if I'm off work or not of course, but I'd be interested in coming out. I'd probably be able to convince a few others to come out as well.

I would love to do the same in Vancouver. I see that Kerrisdale and Riley Park can be rented out - I'm not sure the cost however.

I've volunteered to go in goal. All I need to borrow is a stick and shin pads.
I've bulked up my hockey goalie chest protector and arm pads over the years. I still have my hockey goalie pants and cage. I haven't been in goal in lax in years, but hey, i'm fearless and crazy, if not skilled! Can I use my blocker and trapper? LOL

I am overweight and not too good with a lacrosse stick, but I would be interested. Hement and gloves a must. even non contact, there are bound to be accidents. Oh and a cup would be a good idea too.

What r u guys a bunch of girls? If you're just playing with those rules you don't need all that equipement. NCAA girls play rougher than that and they don't wear any equipment. I play field contact with my buddies all the time and all we wear is a pair of gloves. If anything wear a pair of gloves if you're learning the game. It's totally differnt feel with bare hands. And another suggestions. If you're playing 3 on 3 I wouldn't use the whole floor. You'll just be playing long ball and probably be pretty gased after about 5 minutes.

Meathead
07-03-2002, 02:04 PM
'K, so in that case we only need three more runners (Torrrock, RockStar, myself makes three, and we need three to play against..or with more we can do more) and we'll play half floor.
Canadan, you're in for a rough night!

Proposed format: 3-on-3 and up (depending on how many people want to come out) half floor. If we get more than 10 people, we'll go full floor... :D

newlaxfan2
07-03-2002, 02:20 PM
Meathead -- when are you thinking of doing this? I *might* be able to play, depending on what night you're looking at.

Are you in the BMLL this year? Didn't see your name on the list...

Oh, and I agree with Balls about wearing gloves -- it's a different feel entirely if you don't use them. I'd rather wear mine just to be consistent.

But hey, Balls, I disagree with that comment about being a bunch of girls! The DWLL (Durham Women's Lacrosse League) does play with full equipment and full contact. :)

Just to be a "tough guy"

doesnt make a lot of sense Balls.

I do agree that half floor is the way to go especially if there is only one keeper.

Maybe Balls can come out and teach us?

Well, I'm trying to see if we can get enough people, and then I'll set a night. It's going to be $36 for 1 hour, and split amongst 7 people that works out to just over $5.00 per person. Works out to $5.14 each to be exact, and if we have more people, it'll be even cheaper...

We are looking at a night when there is no major lacrosse for people to go to or junior a lacrosse in the rink, and when everyone will have a chance to get here from wherever they may be, preferable later at night, when it's a little cooler out, so around 7-ish. Probably on a saturday.
Here are a few dates:
13th, 20th, 27th July
3rd, 10th 17th of August. Whichever date works best for everyone is the day we'll try it on. E-mail me at radgarraider@hotmail.com and let me know which date is best for everyone!

Here's who we have so far:

One more and we should be able to do this...all we'd have to do then is set a date!

The arena in question? Old Port Credit Memorial

First of all I don't think playing non-contact 3-3 ball without a helmet would qualify you as a tough guy. Secondly, the guy wants to play in the BMLL next year, a league that doesn't require its participants to wear a cage. What, do you have 100 mph rifle for a shot that you think you're gonna start knockin eachothers teeth out? Maybe you'll get accidently slashed so you better wear arm guards too. Or maybe someone will blast one off your gut so you better wear a kidney protector. I hope all you have a mouth piece too, it sounds like someone is goin all out for this game. Make sure your shoes have good grip or you'll be slidin' all over the place, someone may twist or even break an ankle. Oh yeah and you better make sure all helmets are approved by OLA standards, wouldn't want anyone hurting themsleves during an intense game of 3 on 3 non-contact ball.

Call me a wuss, but if we're using a real ball, I'm wearing a cup and facemask as a minimum. Those balls are hard, heavy, quick-moving, and have a habit of taking crazy bounces.

If Balls is so brave, maybe he can stand up against my sub-100 mph shot without wearing equipment......y'know, just to show me what a real man he is:p

I can only make July 20th. I won't be around for the August dates, work July 13th and the 27th is Brampton at Brooklin.

Personally, I'll be wearing gloves and a helmet, if that makes me a wimp, oh well, I'm a wimp then :)

Meathead, I'm sure we'd be able to get at least 2 more between RockFinn, Donald, Tony and Shawn.

Pickup ball with all that equipement. Can you guys take pictures and post them on here, I'd love to see them. Do you wear cages to OLA games? With low glass in most arenas you're liable of taking a "crazy" shot in the face.

And Rockstar, are you guys playing a game or standing in front of eachother and blasting shots at eachothers junk?

I called Mississauga Parks and Rec today...the only arena that they have available is Mississauga Valley Arena on Mississuga Valley Road.

Date: July 20th.

Time: 7:00 PM

Location: Mississauga Valley Arena.

Conflict: Brampton Excelsiors vs. Akwesasne Thunder @ 7:00 PM.
I'm not sure if people would object to missing the game to play pick-up lacrosse...let me know.

As soon as we have consensus, I'll book the arena. Personally, I don't mind missing the Brampton/Akwesasne game...but I'd fell really badly if we lost. *snx* *snx* Sorry, trying not to laugh... :D

For those of you that I will see tonight at Brampton vs Peterborough, we can klatsch there...

All what equipment? I said cup and cage. If you think I'm a wuss for wanting to protect my eyes, teeth, and jewels from a hard rubber ball, that's your perogative. Personally, I've been hit with stray balls on the shins and arms and they hurt. I would rather not find out what it's like to take one in the face or nuts. I guess you're just tougher than me, Balls:p !

If we can use a soft ball (like in high school phys-ed), maybe I'll drop the cage.

This isn't about being tough enough. It sounds like a friendly game of pick up boxla for some guys to develop their skills and you're gearing up like this is full contact ball. If you're worried about your shins so much you're playing the wrong sport. And I am so proud of myself that I got you to say I'm tougher than you. Now I can sleep at night. Maybe you should play with a tennis ball, or better yet a nerf ball.

Balls:

Once again, you forgot to read my post before voicing your opinion.

I said I've taken shots and loose balls off the shins, and they hurt. I didn't say I was going to wear shin guards or that I was really worried about it, just that it hurts. Given that my face and nuts are a lot softer than my shins, I was planning to protect them if we were to use a regulation ball.

I think all he needs is a goalie stick. I think he plans on buying one but I'm not sure.

Apparently, Brooklin didn't beat Peterborough

Great game though (just like last year when I went there and they ended in a tie, I think it was 13-13).

Brooklin went ahead early, 4-0, but Peterborough came back with a vengeance, 5-5. At that point, they traded goals (I remember it was 7-7 with 7 minutes left) ... 8-8 at end of regulation.

About 5 minutes into OT Toll picked up a loose ball in Brooklin's end, ran it the length of the floor, got around the defender and let'er rip, 9-8 Brooklin. I think that was the fastest I've ever seen Toll run(and that's saying a lot), he was flying!

It looked like it was going to end that way, but with 20.6 seconds on the clock, Peterborough scored (McNamara?).

Nick Trudeau and Marty O'Brien each got in a good scrap. I guess Marty had something to prove since the line-ups (accidentally on purpose?:)) listed Mary O'Brien.

Very entertaining game.

Thanks for the vote of confidence. Unfortunately,. my goaltending style was critiqued afterwards at the bar. It's a case of you can't please everyone, even in a pick-up game. I'll keep playing my way until I get the hang of lax tending again. As for the critic............ I'm thinking about buying some laxtending equipment if I move back to the GTA, and maybe joining a masters league. Unfortunately up here in the "sticks", nothing like that exists. The advantages of living in civilization!!!

The score was 6-6, in a pick-up game with no D, and you weren't even in net the whole time, you must have been doing something right.

Hey, I just had an e-mail from Marci of Intensity Camps. I had been in touch with her asking if they were thinking of running any sessions for ADULTS. (Talk about an untapped market!)

Unfortunately they won't be putting any together for adults for a while yet... Too bad -- if they had them in August, we could get some practice (with instruction!) before the Big Game!!

Meathead
07-26-2002, 02:45 PM
Hey, newlaxfan2...did you mention that the people we're playing have a coach? If Marci knew, maybe we could get them in on the charity action as well.
So recent developments include a coach for the Krewhawks, a national sponsor (I think it's ProJoy, but don't tell anyone), 2 hours floor time at the Brampton CSE, a $25 donation, to be put towards floor time and donations to the Todd Bernhardt Foundation and Sick Kids Hospital...this should be interesting. I think I'll e-mail Chad Richardson in the Toronto Rock office and let him know what's going on...someone there ought to know...:)

Seeing as Mississauga and Brampton Jr. A seasons are over, I searching for the home of the Toronto Beaches club on the unofficial OLA site.

I found directions, but also noticed something very cool as pasted below:

Clarkson Outdoor Box

QEW to Southdown Road (West of Hwy 10), follow South to Bromsgrove, turn
right and follow to Clarkson Secondary, box is behind the school in the
park.

I'm thinking that they will likely freeze Port Credit and the Valley sometime in mid to late September. This one might be a potential home for the fall, as I doubt they will freeze it until winter time.

Folks:

I haven't had a chance to drive by the outdoor box yet, but if anyone is around tomorrow and wants to hack around for a bit, lets meet at the outdoor box around 4:30 or so and figure out where to go from there. If the box is in decent shape and not occupied by ball hockey players, we'll play there. If not, we'll find a field and throw the ball around for a bit.

Might not be a terrible idea to bring hockey sticks. If we can't play LaX, maybe we can challenge whoever is there.

I'll try to blast by the site late morning or early afternoon tomorrow and let everyone know what I find. If anyone has a better idea, call me:

(905)891-9235.

OK folks,

I was just on the way out the door to check out the arena. Mrs Cosmo was kind enought to phone right then and save me the trip.

Apparently the outdoor box exists and is in good shape. Its mostly used as a practice facility for local teams.

Its an asphalt surface, and has boards and chainlink fence to keep the balls in play. The nets are always left there, so if anyone can show, it should be a worthwhile place to hack around for a bit.

Meathead and I will be heading over for about 4:30 to 5:00. Anyone else who can make it is welcome. We'll stay until at least 6:30, and longer if anyone else shows up around then. Hope to see as many as possible!
