its the exact same thing only with a lid on it.... our cup is so prestigious that it was featured in the ricky bobby movie.... or maybe we just have a cheap as hell cup that fit the budget of that movie

It could be worse, it could be the Memorial Cup, which was broke in half during the championship celebration of the Spokane Chiefs.

I didn't really think the Cup was in that bad of shape...until I saw it three inches from my face at Thursday at the Square. I could silversmith a prettier, sturdier cup that the one on that trophy. Sheesh, it's mangled.

Somebody should share those pics with Mr. Jennings and see how he feels about it.

JJ doesn't need to see any pictures; he's right next to the Cup every year, so he knows what it's like.

Let Mr. Jennings worry first about keeping some of the existing teams afloat before he spends the money for a new cup.

And?

He got a $3M expansion fee from some of those dogs, and they're bleeding so much red ink that a few thousand isn't going to do a thing for them.

Find $10K or so for use on a dignified trophy.

Yeah, you can get a decent trophy for under $30000. Geez, the last I checked, the Vince Lombardi (Super Bowl) Trophy is under 30k$.

If we ever want to be taken seriously we need a new trophy.

the NLL is yearsss away from being taken seriously
i think what the cup looks like is the least of the leagues worries

how about one year where a team doesnt fold
how about a real tv deal

screw what the cup looks like stabilize the league first

a cup that i dont think looks that bad is > then a city that attracts less then a high school football game on a friday night

We almost had to deal with it! The f*cking Cup almost broke twisting at the neck. That would've looked great on ESPN! It would've been a top 10 play, I'm sure...

Let's look at the finances...

There'll be at least 13 teams next year. Buy a good cup for $26000 and split equally. That's $2000 per team - and it's a one-time fixed cost. If the teams can't afford that $2000, then they shouldn't be in this business! If that cup had broken on during the celebration, you know the negative publicity would have been worse than $26000.

Worse comes to worse, get another expansion team and suck out about $25000 from their $5000000 expansion fee. Let's see... 2.5e4 / 5e7 = 0.5e-3 = 5e-4 = 0.0005 = 0.05% of the expansion fee. I quote Cartman "You're breaking my balls. You're breaking my balls."

"Just remember dahlings, it is better to look good than to feel good" - Fernando of "You llllloooooookkkkk maaaahhhhvalous" fame on SNL in the 1980s.

I have to agree with Hollywood on this one that the trophy is the least of our worries. Jennings seems to be gung ho on expansion, expansion, expansion while teams fold pretty much every year. TV deals have been non-existant. Let's focus on what's really important. A new trophy would be nice but let's look at the big picture instead of worrying what the trophy looks like let's make sure the teams who ultimately play for the cup are the next year or year after gone. That's what really looks bush league.

I won't disagree with that assessment. The bottom line, though, is that the league does need a new trophy of some sort and it should get one ASAP because if the existing trophy breaks on live TV, that will look just as bush league.

Our cup does look "like' the movie cup but it also resembles the Calder Cup and a boatload of other awards.
The trophy doesn't make the league credible, the LEAGUE makes the league credible

Exactly, Every year a team is going down in flames-The Casaulties: Blazers,Thunder=Wave, Bulls,Smash,Attack,Turbos,Cobras,Saints & what is the news on Arizona are they coming back, isn't Edmonton and Rochester both having financial difficulty right now? The new Boston team hasn't gotten off the ground yet. This leagues needs to be stabalized, it needs sponsors,it needs a TV contract, Mr Jennings needs to deal with reality and stop day dreaming about this massive expansion in the next two years. An expensive high profile trophy doesn't need to be his priority. What good does a nice trophy do if you don't have a league!

I won't disagree with what you say, but I will answer your question.

Having a good trophy is like having a decent suit when you go to a job interview. If you go to a real job interview and look like sh!t because you didn't spend the $$ to get a decent suit, you're not going to get the job because the message you send is "I look pathetic and not professional". Similarly, if the league goes around showcasing a sorry-looking trophy, the message it sends is "We look pathetic and not professional". If the league looks like it's going out of business, then who's going to want to get involved with it? I'm not looking for a "Rolls-Royce" trophy or even a "Mercedes", but what they have now isn't much better than a "Yugo" and that will be apparent if the Cup breaks on live TV or has another close in shot like on the ESPN broadcast showing dings and holes in the Cup.

As sad as it might seem, investing in image is part of overall investment, period. Furthermore, that total investment only costs about a $20000 one-time cost and maybe two hours with Tiffany's down the block. The cost-benefit analysis of rewards and ease of execution to solve this problem make getting a decent trophy an intelligent business decision that does not seriously detract in any way the efforts to get the league to stabilize and grow.
