The Wings used an explosive third quarter to defeat the New York Saints, 15-13, last night in a National Lacrosse League game at the First Union Center.
The Wings (3-1) took charge early in the third period, which was filled with Saints penalties. While New York defender Darren Lowe sat in the penalty box because too many Saints had been on the field, forward Jim Keenan dragged a Wings player to the floor by the neck.
The Wings took advantage of New York's miscues to post their second straight victory.
"We know them and they know us," Wings coach Tony Resch said. "In the third period, we started to break their goalie down a bit, the crowd got behind us, the momentum built, and by the middle of the third quarter we got our energy going."
The Wings, playing in front of 16,750 - the NLL's largest crowd of the season - scored five times in a span of 3 minutes, 16 seconds in the third quarter to go from being down by 6-5 to leading by 10-6. They also netted three scores in 1:18 midway through the fourth quarter after New York had cut their lead to 12-10.
The onslaught began with Tom Marachek, who finished the game with three goals. Gewas Schindler then scored the first of his three goals, followed by Jake Bergey, who collected three goals and five assists, and John McEvoy, who netted two goals.
Mark Frye, an attack player for New York (2-3), finally broke the Wings' momentum with a controversial goal that had Wings goalie Dallas Eliuk beating on the glass in front of the goal judge. Eliuk didn't think the shot had gone in. The goal was Frye's third.
Although the lead changed five times before halftime, it was never by more than a goal. By the break, the teams were tied at 5. The Wings had taken 27 shots, the Saints 28. Each time the Wings scored, the Saints countered with a goal.

Tom Marachek, Gewas Schindler, Jake Bergey, John McEvoy and Jim Rogers each scored as the Wings took a 10-6 lead. Three of the goals came in a 35-second span.
The Saints (2-3) answered with three of the game's next five goals to close the Wings' lead to 12-9 after three quarters.
As they did in the first three quarter, the Wings allowed the first goal of the fourth, as Roy Colsey scored at the 2:44 mark. The Wings scored three unanswered goals to take a 15-11 lead with 7:20 left.
Bergey led the Wings with eight points (three goals, five assists), while Schindler had three goals and three assists. Marechek and McEvoy added two goals each. Kevin Finneran, who extended his record consecutive games streak to 99, tallied six assists.
"Jake Bergey is doing all of the little things well," Wings coach Tony Resch said. "The scoring is easy to see, but he is really setting up his teammates and has a greater sense of what's happening. He has really been a catalyst for us so far."
